Bringing the New Towns to the New Town

The 2018 Edinburgh International Book Festival brings over 800 authors and performers together with audiences in our tented village in the heart of the capital in August. Alongside some of the biggest names in global literature, sport and politics, we’re thrilled to bring the voices of Scotland’s New Towns to the stage as part of our ReimagiNation events at the Book Festival.

Following fascinating verbatim theatre pieces performed in Cumbernauld and Glenrothes, which allowed local people to tell the stories of the town which author and historian Daniel Gray helped uncover during long engagements in each town, a special finale piece will be performed at the Book Festival on Wednesday 22 August. Daniel is working with the people he met over the past two years in all five of Scotland’s New Towns – Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Irvine, Glenrothes and Livingston – to shape a final story of lives lived in these fascinating and divisive locations.

Many of the conversations and topics which underpinned our two year tour of the New Towns will feature at the Book Festival too, particularly in three specially curated ReimagiNation debates on housing, health and the environment.
