Ward 20 in the old Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, was a ward dealing with spinal and brain injuries. Nurse Rene Meredith (future wife) and myself ended up on this ward together, but we were I suppose about the same grades then, unlike some other stories! Rene and a nurse from Newcastle, Sheila, were a crazy team together, but one day they stitched me up! The Sister on this day, was perhaps a bit eccentric so I won’t name her, but suddenly you could hear her shouting ‘Mr Spock, Mr Spock’ and I did turn round only to see her looking at me! What was going on, well she wanted me to clean the brass plaques above the beds, stating who had endowed that said bed space. So, very confused I did start cleaning, not really a nurse’s job, but out of the corner of my eye, were Rene and Sheila trying to control themselves as they carried on doing what nurses were meant to do! All settled, and they told me Sister had asked what my name was, and they had replied Mr Spock. Early afternoon came and the late shift Sister came on duty. She had asked how things had gone in the morning and the other had replied that it had been fairly quiet, and Mr. Spock had cleaned the plaques. Of course the late Sister started smiling and asked her who Mr Spock was, and early Sister pointed at me! Well the mistake was pointed out that I was Nurse Hogg, however it was also noticed the culprits were grinning! Later on Sister on late duty, cornered the miscreants and proceeded to give them a mild rebuke but then laughed ever so slightly with them!
