Every time I pass what used to be the Royal Infirmary I look with nostalgia at the turrets of the building.
Freshly arrived from Holland to come to live in Edinburgh I had an accident and was rushed to the Royal Infirmary. I was concussed and totally confused. When asked for my address I gave what had been my Dutch adress. My husband started to explain, but was curtly interrupted by the receptionist who told him: “I am talking to the patient!”
I had to stay in the hospital for a few days, and on day two was asked whether I wanted a bath.
Yes, I would love a bath! Already, this was very unusual, but even more so when I was shown the bath. It stood on a raised platform in the middle of one of the turrets and luxuriating from there one had a fantastic panoramic view over Edinburgh.
My best hospital experience ever!
