In 1973-74 I worked on the Renal Unit which comprised
- Renal Intensive Care
- Dialysis Unit for Outpatients
- Ward for less ill patients
- Another building where patients with hepatitis were analysed when unable to at home
My most memorable shift was spent observing a living donor kidney transplant. A little girl was on renal failure and her father was a suitable match. I saw the kidney being removed from the father and gently placed in the child’s abdomen and blood vessels etc being attached. Cheers were given when the kidney worked and urine was produced and dripped into her urinary catheter.
A life saved because of a brave father and the surgical, lab, nurses, cleaners, porters – working as a team.
